Far Away (Ground Zero)

The one place we prioritized once we found a coin locker for our suitcase and sat down for lunch at the station was @nyan_nyanji, the Cat Temple on the outskirts of town. As millennials from the internet, it just felt like that had to be the one religious site of the many religious sites in Kyoto we couldn’t miss, if we could only see one. It would be more than an hour by bus and back, and it did not disappoint. I’ll post a fever dream of a Reel about it shortly.

The second place we prioritized after getting back from Nyan Nyan-Ji, retrieving our suitcase, and checking into our hotel, was the iconic @facehouse_kyoto building.

I realized we had just enough time to pop over before the gallery closed and get back before our dinner reservations (the only such booking I’d made in the whole trip), so we said let’s do it.

It was a bit of a maze finding it, but we got there with 10 minutes to spare, and it too did not disappoint. You just can’t help but smile when you walk up to this goofy place, just like the two other couples we saw doing exactly what we were doing. We sheepishly acknowledged each other’s childish glee and left with a couple of mementos.

Two moments on Kyoto mass transit.

This is how it felt to walk through @nyan_nyanji, a temple that feels somewhere between a meme and serious devotion. One moment you are looking at a cat and the next you are bowing to a thousand year-old buddha statue. It’s glorious. I think in Japan, places can hold a lot of reverence and joy at the same time. The gift shop had a lot of cat merch and very helpful staff.
