Today I’m comparing the SX260 HS to the ELPH 340 HS, a PowerShot that came out two years later with 16 megapixels crammed into the same sized sensor.
This was Christine’s old camera that we found hiding at the bottom of a box when we moved apartments two years. It ended up becoming my only travel cam in Costa Rica, after my Ricoh MySport went kaput very early in the trip. It’s also called “Pete.” That’s what you see when you pair it with Canon’s Camera Connect software. I don’t know why.
I didn’t have anywhere special to be today so these are just random comparison shots I took in between coffee with a comrade and my third chiropractor check-in appointment. You’ll be happy to know my body’s been holding the adjustment since last week. Fingers crossed.
Since the SX260 allows for more manual control, I made sure to keep both cameras on auto to get a better comparison. I feel like the ELPH 340’s colors pop more but the SX260 picks up more details. It also seems to have the better lens.
Incidentally, that camera was made in Japan while the later model was made in China—not sure if that necessarily translated to cheaper optics, but the build quality is definitely different. The SX model has more metal components while the ELPH is plasticky.
