One of the coolest things about Perugia is its extensive underground city, with Etruscan wells and Roman acropoli all stacked up on top of each other.
This here is the Rocca Paolina, a Renaissance fortress built by Pope Paul III to flex his papal power in the region, that just happens to have a subterranean component because Il Papa had much of the area demolished to build the thing, turning ancient streets into underground passageways. And now, much of these are freely accessible from the Mini Metro station, which totally boggled my mind. x
This series of photos represents one of the most magical moments for me on this trip. Christine was in a nearby art store, the same one she’d gone to years ago, so I wandered around a bit and ended up at the bottom of this hill, where a Eucharistic Adoration was taking place in the most beautiful little church. It was so peaceful out here, on the threshold. A few minutes after I took this first photo, an older woman emerged and greeted another woman. They chatted for a few minutes before saying hello to a younger woman in a soccer jersey and a backpack who’d just arrived. A short while later, they all started to make their way up those stairs, and everything was as quiet as I’d found it again. x
