May Day mise-en-scène, pt. 3 x May Day mise-en-scène, pt. 1 I’m keeping up the tradition of taking a photo of The Dreamer with every camera I have. Here’s one with the Lumix, taken on May Day. x May Day mise-en-scène, pt. 4 x

Mr. Melee told me that he’s perma-banned from Instagram, so he probably won’t see this, but I’m sure you’ve seen him before, if you’ve been to any rally, march, or protest in past year or so. This was from May Day. I’ll be posting a few photos. Me and the other 10,000 people with cameras who were out here today. x Comrade Nate was a little suspicious of my intentions at first, but I think I won him over with the sheer power of my airtight logic: if you show up looking this cool, you’re gonna get pestered for a … Continue reading “Finding a Political Home on May Day” →
The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. Happy Easter to all who celebrate. x I didn’t pay attention to the calendar when I booked our tickets to see Žižek months ago—it was last night, one of the biggest nights of the year at work—so I didn’t end up going. But Christine did. Here’s the man signing my scrapbook (he said I was very wise to ask for his signature on that—don’t tell his publisher) in a photo that Christine took using her old PowerShot called “Pete.” Look at how this self-proclaimed Christian Atheist is … Continue reading “Easter, Žižek, and Abolishing ICE” →
One of my greatest pleasures lately has been decluttering, particularly letting go of books I know I’ll not be rereading, if I’d ever finished them in the first place. Like unclenching a fist and letting the blood flow. Letting go. Letting recirculate. The simplest thing in the world, but not for me. I’ve spent my whole life holding on tightly. Refusing to let go of whatever I’ve clawed back from the jaws of oblivion. Sentiment becomes sediment. It’s time for the levees to erode. x No Kings. Kontra Kapitalismus. “With all that’s going on in the world.” I was thinking about this turn of phrase, with all that’s going on in the world, and all that’s going on in my part of the world in particular. So I did what I often do when a thought gets lodged inside my brain: I looked it up. I know that in this house we love to hate it, but I liked how off-putting yet accurate it sounded, so here is what Google’s AI overview had to say: “ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴀʟʟ ᴛʜᴀᴛ’ꜱ ɢᴏɪɴɢ ᴏɴ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ” ɪꜱ ᴀ ᴄᴏᴍᴍᴏɴʟʏ ᴜꜱᴇᴅ, ᴛɪᴍᴇʟʏ ᴘʜʀᴀꜱᴇ … Continue reading “With All That’s Going On in the World (More Camera Comparisons)” →
I was wondering where all the protest songs had gone. x Do you think King County Metro would put these up on bus shelters? x Still lives of life lately, with a moving preamble. x
“What is an assemblage? It is a multiplicity which is made up of many heterogeneous terms and which establishes liaisons, relations between them… The assemblage’s only unity is that of co-functioning: it is a symbiosis, a ‘sympathy’.” (Gilles Deleuze & Félix Guattari, A Thousand Plateaus) If solidarity is emergent, then: it cannot be declared into existence; it cannot be willed by ideology alone; and it cannot be guaranteed by shared beliefs. It must be built – through organizing forms; through material arrangements; through temporal rhythms; and through shared exposure to risk and consequence. Solidarity is not a moral appeal; it’s … Continue reading “Assemblages of Solidarity (End Empire or End the World)” →
Moments past midnight, after a whirlwind three-night spree spent with comrades old and new. x I loved this moment and was honored to spend time with this freedom fighter in the pistachio power suit. x “Reclaiming our shared reality is the first step. Getting into spaces like this, unpacking the trauma and what they have done to us, because it is a full frontal assault – on our minds, on our bodies, everyone that we know… every living creature on the planet.”—@fababs speaking at UW, featuring a poignant moment I captured at SIFF Uptown the next day. x
